In his book “Awakening The Buddha” by Lama Surya Das is informed the story of Milarepa, a famous Tibetan yogi who lived in the 11th century, and one of his prize students, Gampopa, a physician and monk. After several years of studying with Milarepa, it was time for Gampopa to part from his teacher and he requested for one last mentor, one instruction he might carry away with him. Initially, Milarepa seemed hesitant, saying that what was required after all these years was more effort, not more directions.
Then, as Gampopa started on his way, crossing the narrow stream that parted him from his master, Milarepa shouted out, “Hey Doctor-Monk, I have one extensive secret guideline. It is too valuable to give away to just anyone.” As Gampopa happily looked back to get this last teaching from his precious master, Milarepa reversed and bent over, bring up his flimsy cotton robe. Milarepa’s buttocks were as callused and pockmarked as a horse’s hoof, toughened from all those hours and years invested in seated meditation on acid rock. Milarepa shouted, “That is my final teaching, my heart-son. Simply do it!”
Simply do it … hmm! If only.
The crucial things in life … easy to comprehend but alas hard to do.
Here is my list of ‘easy/hard’ hacks that make a considerable impact on your life.
A few of these may be of second nature to you. If so cut me some slack OK I am still a work in progress.
Life Hack # 1 – To handle difficult people first change yourself. I consider this the most crucial hack for human relations. We aim to change people that irritate us or bother us. We complain, we provide ‘constructive feedback (sic!)’, we threaten, we blackmail, etc. There are definitely scenarios when we have to do this such as drug dependencies and so on. But when it comes to altering individuals’s behavior the only solution: change yourself. Envision how the world would be if we each change ourselves than trying to go about altering peoples’ habits or beliefs.
I guess this is what Dale Carnegie implied when he exhorted us to stop practicing the evil Cs: Criticizing, Condemning and Grumbling.
Life Hack # 2 – Attitude. The significance of a positive attitude did not sink in for a long while. I utilized to think it was like looking at life with rose tinted glasses. That it detracted you from realism. Then I realized 2 concrete benefits of a positive mindset: 1) Whenever I held a lack of confidence I appeared to obtain a more negative reaction from others. And it appeared I reacted more adversely to events. Life was just incredibly demanding. There seemed a great deal of bumps on the roadway. However when I began entertaining a more positive mindset I was no longer so stressed out. Likewise I might believe far better. 2) Zig Ziglar addressed my predicament about the rose tinted glasses when he stated “Favorable thinking will let you do everything much better than negative thinking will”. So while your level of skill will not change when you alter your mindset you get to utilize more of your abilities than otherwise.
Life Hack # 3 – Thinking. “Thinking is the hardest work there is, which is the probable factor so couple of take part in it” Henry Ford. I used to believe I was well … believing till I understood I was simply substituting thinking with fretting and worrying.
I did believe … when … see my article entitled “the-highest-form-of-human-activity-thinking” to discover what took place.
Life Hack # 4 – Physical Exercise. Someone as soon as wrote this and I have not forgotten it ever since. “Whenever you workout you make a deposit into your health account that will subsequently assist you make withdrawals when needed and still be able to make it through.”
Life Hack # 5 – Purchase relationship building. When I was more youthful I was naive. I utilized to really think that your work would promote itself. Just doing your job incredibly well does not cut it. However on the other hand doing a job inadequately is the kiss of death.
Life Hack # 6 – Get God on your side. There is something supernaturally guaranteeing about a greater power that will set things right, that will get you the Karma you deserve. Now this declaration of mine might still be the topic of metaphysical arguments between the atheists and believers. Nevertheless the impact of thinking in God is as real to me as the day-to-day weather condition. While I paid devoted obeisance to my deities it was not until I read Joel Osteen’s book “Become a Better You” that I went from the dutiful to heartfelt.
Life Hack # 7 – Be like the rhino. No I am not indicating you eat and consume and get the 60000 pound mass of the rhino. Develop the thick skin mentality of the rhino. At two inches it is practically like an armor plate. Also charge at your goals like the rhino, without uneasiness or doubt. I used to be a cow. In truth I was called one by my buddies in my undergraduate school. Well this cow graduated and went to work. One time I got so upset with the constructive feedback (sic!) provided by my then supervisor that I practically got into a traffic mishap. Ending up being a rhino suggests ending up being courageous. Criticism will not hinder you.You no longer concern that exactly what you say and do will upset others. Covering your ass will no longer become the sole guiding concept of our daily activities. I was influenced to end up being a rhino after reading Scott Alexander’s book “Advanced Rhinocerology”.
Life Hack # 8 – Take dangers. Perry Marshall informs the story of his professor, Dr. Knoll in college. One day the teacher asked a question “Exactly what is the most important virtue for being successful in life”. He got lots of responses such as determination, love and so on. He nodded and stated these were very important however the king of all virtues was courage without which no other was possible. To take risks requires courage. And if you are not taking threats then you are decomposing.
Life Hack # 9 – Forgive others. It took me a very long time to realize the knowledge of this action. However finally when I got much older and a little bit smarter I recognized that flexible others would get you off the emotional concern of holding an animosity. It would set you totally free. Never mind if the other individual continues to be a jerk.
Life Hack # 10 – Thankfulness. Sure we have problems but lets alter the context a bit. Scientists recently found a world, Kepler-10b, that has to do with the size of the earth. Researchers theorize that at one time this planet was far enough from its star as to support life but that some catastrophic occasion may have caused it move much closer to the star. Its conditions are so bad with surface temperature levels of 2500 degree F hat it makes earth look like a paradise.
